There are four types of CFASF membership: regular, affliate and student. See below for the membership requirements of each type of membership.

Please note: All membership types must comply with the sponsor requirements outlined here.

 

To be accepted as a Regular member an individual must:

  • Have a bachelor's degree or equivalent education or work experience.
  • Agree to adhere to the Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Conduct.
  • Have four years of acceptable professional work experience in the investment decision making process and pass the CFA® Level I examination OR have six years of acceptable professional work experience in the investment decision making process and pass a self- administered standards of practice examination offered by CFA Institute OR be at the time of admission a CFA® Charterholder; and
  • Be either engaged in such acceptable professional work at the time of application or have acceptable work experience consisting of (a) collecting, evaluating or applying financial, economic or statistical data as appropriate as part of the investment decision-making process, or (b) supervising directly or indirectly those who practice such activities, or (c) teaching such activities.

 

To be accepted as an Affiliate member an individual must:

  • Agree to adhere to the Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Conduct AND passed at least Level I of the CFA® examination OR successfully complete a self-administered standards of professional practice exam which can be taken at a nominal cost.

        

To be accepted as a Student member an individual must:

  • Individuals must be currently enrolled in a graduate level finance program (professor's signature required)
  • Students must fufill the sponsorship requirements
  • Sign an agreement to adhere to the Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Conduct
  • Pay Student membership dues.

 

To be accepted as an Industry member:

  • Must be a professional in investment and/or related financial services industry, or an individual who, in a professional capacity, supervises financial analysts (directly or indirectly) or teaches, conducts research or serves as an administrator in the field of financial analysis at a college or university, such as professor (including assistant and associate professor) or dean, or a teacher or research fellow in the field of financial or economic analysis at a college or university

  • Applicants must be regularly employed for a period of at least three years in a field such as venture capital, real estate, treasury, corporate finance, money management consulting, or other disciplines closely allied to financial analysis and who, in the opinion of the Board of Directors would make a contribution to the programs and work of the Society,
  • Sign an agreement to adhere to the Code of Ethics and Standards of Professional Conduct
  • Pay Industry membership dues.

 

Neither Student or Industry members are afforded members under the California Nonprofit Corporation Law.
