Wealth Management Series: Mitigating Risk of Concentrated Stock Positions
San Francisco and Silicon Valley have seen tremendous amounts of wealth creation over the last few years. Much of this recent wealth creation has resulted in ownership of concentrated stock positions. In this session, we will discuss some of the macro- and micro- economic risks associated with ownership of concentrated positions. We will also discuss some of financial tools and planning methods clients can consider to help mitigate the risks associated with their large positions. Ralph Drybrough, Managing Director, Fort Point Capital Partners
Ralph Drybrough is a co-founder of Fort Point Capital Partners focused on the ongoing management and strategic direction of the firm's risk management business. Mr. Drybrough is also co-founder of StratiFi, a technology platform that empowers financial advisors to deliver better investment outcomes to their clients through the application of customized option overlay strategies. For nearly 20 years, his principal investment focus has been advising clients on the use of exchange traded and over the counter (OTC) options as risk mitigation and return enhancement tools. Prior to starting Fort Point in 2008, Mr. Drybrough spent three years as a Principal at the Presidio Group in San Francisco focused on delivering bespoke wealth advisory solutions to entrepreneurs, family offices and foundations. He began his career at UBS in Chicago followed by six years at the Merrill Lynch Private Banking and Investment Group in San Francisco. Mr. Drybrough serves as a board member and head of the investment committee for the Raphael House of San Francisco. He has a BA from Indiana University
Jane Leung, CFA, Managing Director & CIO, Scenic Advisement
Jane Leung, CFA, CFP is a Managing Director and Chief Investment Officer at Scenic Advisement where she heads the Asian Business Development & Capital Markets and Wealth Management divisions. Prior to joining Scenic, Ms. Leung held senior roles at BlackRock/iShares, including Head of Asia Pacific iShares and Index Equity. Prior to running the iShares business in Asia, she was a Senior Portfolio Manager for BlackRock’s U.S. Equity Index business, responsible for over $70 billion in investment assets. She has deep expertise in risk management, portfolio construction and investment education. Ms. Leung currently serves on the CFA Society San Francisco Board of Directors. She received her BA in Political Science & International Relations from University of California, Los Angeles and holds the CFA and CFP designations.
Lisa Powers, CPA, M.S., Law of Taxation, President, The Powers Group
Lisa Powers, CPA, M.S., Law of Taxation is President of The Powers Group, in San Francisco, CA. She leads and owns Powers Accountancy Corporation, a tax advisory firm for high net worth clients and their affiliates. She also leads Powers Equity, Inc. a commercial real estate developer /advisor, focusing on “tax-wise” real estate investing. Ms. Powers has a highly entrepreneurial background, having formed and sold four distinctly different businesses after implementation and achievement of concept. Tax basis is a specialty of the firm in both business taxation and estate and trust formation; also, tax result optimization. Ms. Powers graduated from Golden Gate University’s Masters of Tax Law Program in 1987 after receiving a special admittance due to passing the CPA Exam before completing her undergraduate degree.
Anil Daryani, CFA, Senior Vice President, HSBC Private Bank
Anil Daryani is a Senior Vice President and Investment Counsellor for HSBC Private Banking. Mr. Daryani works closely with a team of professionals serving the investment management, lending, trust, wealth planning and banking needs of high net worth and ultra-high net worth clients. He specializes in investment management including portfolio construction methods, derivative overlay strategies, and asset/liability matching strategies. Mr. Daryani began his career in UBS’ Wealth Management Americas division, where he worked within a corporate services group to manage both corporate- and private- client assets. In 2015, he joined BNY Mellon as a Vice President and Portfolio Manager, where he helped to grow their wealth management presence in the SF Peninsula / Silicon Valley area. He received a BS in Business Administration from the Haas School of Business at University of California at Berkeley and a BA in Economics from University of California at Berkeley. Mr. Daryani has been a CFA Charterholder since 2011 and is an active member of CFA Institute and CFA Society San Francisco.
