Join us for the final CFA/RIA Wealth Management Series of 2016 on Thursday November 10 as we discuss Alternative Investments for High Net Worth Investors- Private Equity/ VC, Liquid vs. Illiquid Alternatives.  The session will address alternative diversification, portfolio allocation, the types of alternative investments suited for private investor portfolios and how the sector is evolving.
    

Moderator:

Matthew Sekera is the Alternative Investment Specialist for Merrill Lynch. In this role, Matt as-sists the firm's advisors and clients evaluate and manage various alternative investment strate-gies, covering hedge funds, private equity, real estate, private lending, managed futures and non-traditional mutual funds. Prior to his current role, Mr. Sekera helped launch private equity strategies for both Jones Lang LaSalle (NYSE: JLL) and Pantheon Ventures (CVE: PVX). Pre-ceding alternative investments, Mr. Sekera spent several years in strategy and platform distribu-tion for industry leading traditional, long-only asset managers. Native to California, Mr. Sekera earned his degree from the University of California at Santa Barbara and resides in Danville, CA with his wife and two kids.

 

Panelists:

Michael Dupuis, Principal, Private Wealth Management Group
Michael Dupuis is a Principal in the Private Wealth Management Group involved in raising capi-tal for Blackstone’s private and public funds in the Pacific Northwest region. Prior to joining Blackstone in January 2012, Mr. Dupuis was a Senior Vice President in the Private Client Ser-vices Division of the Trust Company of the West responsible for business development and cli-ent service of endowment, foundation and family office clients. Before joining TCW in 2002 he was a Vice President of Roxbury Capital Management. Earlier he was the Director of Marketing for Munn, Bernhard and Associate. He began his investment career in 1985 with Smith, Barney, Harris, Upham in New York as a financial advisor and was a Vice President of Kidder, Peabody & Company in a similar capacity. Mr. Dupuis holds a BS from The Ohio University.


Shafiq A. Taymuree, Executive Vice President of Stonecrest

Shafiq Taymuree is Executive Vice President of Stonecrest. Shafiq has been with Stonecrest since 1998 in a variety of roles, rising from loan officer to senior management. As lead underwriter and manager of our lending funds, he helped navigate the firm successfully through the 2008 real estate crisis—with no loss of principal and no missed monthly income distributions to our fund investors. As head of our Asset Management team, Shafiq played a key role in bringing an $86 million portfolio under Stonecrest management in 2009 to help stabilize and unwind that fund. 
Serving on the California Mortgage Association’s Education Committee, Shafiq has spoken on various lending topics as a presenter and panelist at CMA events. His knowledge of both residential and commercial underwriting along with his experience in asset management have provided valuable contributions to the association and its members. He has also been a speaker at Alts for RIAs, an educational seminar for financial advisors on fixed income alternative due diligence. 
Shafiq attended California State University, Hayward (now Cal State East Bay), where he majored in finance. He is an avid golfer who loves to spend time with his two daughters.


Jean Lu, CFA, Senior Investment Director, Cambridge Associates
Jean is a Senior Investment Director based out of the firm’s Menlo Park office.  Her team man-ages $2 billion across all asset classes, including hedge funds, private equity, venture capital, and real assets. Recent projects include building a $100 million diversified portfolio from cash and designing a CIO incentive compensation plan for a large family office. Jean also serves as a firm-wide resource on the application of derivatives in client portfolios. Prior to joining Cambridge Associates, Jean worked at J.P. Morgan Asset Management in the U.S. Behavioral Finance Small Cap Equities team and held a MBA internship in finance and corporate social responsibility (CSR) at Visa, Inc. She received an MBA with honors from the University of California at Berke-ley and holds undergraduate degrees in business and math from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
