Lisa Goldberg, PhD, Director of Research, Aperio Group
Lisa Goldberg is Aperio’s Director of Research. She has a joint appointment in Statistics and Economics at the University of California, Berkeley, where she serves as Co-Director of the Consortium for Data Analytics in Risk (CDAR). Prior to joining Aperio, Lisa was Executive Director of Research at MSCI, where she oversaw research supporting asset managers, pension funds, endowments, and sovereign wealth funds, with an emphasis on risk due to extreme events, asset allocation, and credit. She has held academic positions at City University of New York, the Institute for Advanced Study, l’Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques, and the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute, and she was a Sloan Fellow from 1987 to 1990. She serves on the editorial board of the Financial Analysts Journal, and she is an expert judge for the Haas Business School’s Moskowitz Prize for Socially Responsible Investing. She is the co-author of a book, Portfolio Risk Analysis, and more than 40 of her articles on mathematics and quantitative finance have been published in peer-reviewed journals. Lisa, with co-authors Robert Anderson and Stephen Bianchi, was awarded a Graham and Dodd Scroll Award for Excellence by the Financial Analysts Journal for “Will My Risk Parity Strategy Outperform?” in 2012. With Aperio co-authors Ran Leshem and Patrick Geddes, Lisa was awarded a Harry M. Markowitz Special Distinction Award by the Journal of Investment Management for “Restoring Value to Minimum Variance” in 2014. Lisa holds a BA in Mathematics from the University of Rochester and a PhD in Mathematics from Brandeis University.
Robert Turley, Vice President, Dodge & Cox
Robert Turley leads asset allocation and portfolio strategy research at Dodge & Cox, a San Francisco-based investment manager with $300 billion in assets under management. He joined Dodge & Cox after completing his doctoral studies at Harvard, where he also taught an undergraduate course in Household and Consumer Finance. His academic research focuses on how time horizon affects risk and return and has been published in various journals, including the Journal of Financial Economics. Robert began his career as a member of Goldman Sachs’ Quantitative Investment Strategies team. He has also worked as a consultant, developing the initial investment strategies for Eaglewood Capital, focused on peer-to-peer lending, and Kepos Capital, whose hedge funds employ quantitative techniques to invest in global markets. He received his BA in Economics and Mathematics from BYU, an MBA from NYU’s Stern School of Business, and an AM and PhD in Business Economics from Harvard. He is a CFA charterholder.
Nita Patel, CFA, Managing Director, Cambridge Associates
Nita Patel is a Managing Director in Cambridge Associates’ San Francisco office, advising clients on investment issues such as asset allocation strategy, manager selection, and investment program evaluation. Nita currently works with foundations, colleges & universities, independent schools, and private clients in the U.S. ranging in size from $20 million to over $1 billion. Nita has served on the Firm’s conferences, including speaking on investment trends and challenges at C|A’s University and Foundation Roundtables and C|A Trustee Conferences. She currently serves as a member of the Nonprofit Practice Group’s Portfolio Counsel, reviewing the Firm’s clients’ portfolios across geographies and varying objectives. Prior to joining Cambridge Associates in 2007, Nita worked as a Senior Vice President, Senior Equity Analyst at Alliance Bernstein in Domestic Growth Equity Research for seven years. Nita covered various technology sectors including telecom services and internet commerce, most recently focusing on software and services names. She also managed positions in her sector in the $3 billion research funds, and co-managed a $250 million technology long/short fund. Prior to joining Alliance Bernstein, Nita interned at Fidelity Investments as a High Yield Research Analyst, and worked as an Investments Analyst at Shell Oil Company Pension Trust in Houston. Before attending business school, Nita was the Head Equities Trader for Investment Research Company, a $2.2 billion quantitatively-oriented investment management firm.
