Derick Carter has served on the Board of Directors of the Heart Based Institute, where he currently serves as Director of Program Strategy and Outreach, since 2019. In this capacity, he helps create and deliver customized and effective program offerings that reflect the Institute’s heart-centered mission, as well as the specific needs of its audience. He has been practicing Open Heart Meditation® since 2012 and also serves as a local coordinator for workshops. He is grateful for the opportunity to integrate his spiritual path with his professional life—helping individuals and organizations reconnect with the spiritual heart as a source of inner peace, clarity, and transformation.
Mr. Carter has spent over 25 years working at the intersection of well-being, work, and system change. Holding such roles such as Well-Being Officer, Chief Community Builder, and continuous improvement consultant, his diverse experience spans corporate, nonprofit, and government sectors. Regardless of his professional audience, a common focus remains on guiding leaders and teams toward more connected, purposeful, and harmonious ways of working. Mr. Carter is also the founder of Building Togetherness®, a unique collective well-being and heart-centered leadership initiative.
Executive Director, Heart Based Institute
Jim Van Huysse joined Heart Based Institute as a member of the Board of Directors in 2015 before moving into his current role as Executive Director in late 2018. He brings over 30 years of operational experience to HBI, having led organizations and managed strategic planning, marketing, and business development functions within Fortune 100 companies and numerous startups. He has also served in a number of non-profit organizations, including as a Trustee and Step One School where he chaired the preschool’s first capital campaign, raising over $1.7M.
Mr. Van Huysse has been practicing heart based meditation since 2006, and is grateful to be able to combine his business experience with his spiritual practice, helping individuals, service providers, business professionals, and organizations realize the transformative effects of the spiritual heart.
Managing Director, X1 Asset Management, LLC
Jennie Chen is a Managing Director at X1 Asset Management LLC, a firm specializing in algorithmic trading strategies in the foreign exchange (Forex) market.
At X1, Ms. Chen plays a key role in operations management. Prior to joining X1, she was a management consultant at PwC, advising clients across the technology, financial, and healthcare sectors.
Ms. Chen holds a Master’s degree in Information Systems from Claremont Graduate University, is a CFA charterholder, and holds a Series 65 license. Ms. Chen is an active member of CFA Society San Francisco and serves on the Society’s Member Programming Advisory Council.
