What should professional investment managers know about digital currencies? 2024’s launch of exchange-traded products (ETP) has taken Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH) from retail to institutional scale as a storehouse of value. Together, they now surpass the market capitalization of U.S. high-yield and Canadian public equities. Moreover, a modest allocation to BTC and/or ETH since 2013 would have improved total returns while diversifying risk relative to a traditional 60/40 equity/fixed income mix.
Can crypto move from being a store of value to becoming a true medium of exchange? If so, how will a distributed ledger asset co-exist with the custodianship of conventional asset classes? And how can they continue outperforming equity and debt total returns while remaining uncorrelated with both?
